This FAQ is taken from the original review of the Panasonic UJ-845. You may also find it helpful to look through the comments.

Can I make the drive region-free?

The Panasonic UJ-845 uses RPC protection to ensure you cannot make it region-free, and to stop all anti-protection software. If you can find a hacked firmware then you may be able to get around this protection, otherwise there's nothing you can do.

I get 'corrupted or missing driver error code 31', what do I do?

You need to remove upper and lower filters. See the Microsoft Support Page.

Is there a newer firmware?

Panasonic has released no official firmware update. However, certain manufacturers who use OEM Panasonic drives have released newer firmwares. It is not recommended to update your drive with a firmware from another manufacturer.

No responsibility is accepted for any damage caused by updating your drive's firmware.

How do I enable DVD-RAM support in Windows XP?

You need to install the Panasonic DVD-RAM driver.

What brand of DVD works best?

According to feedback, the following brands have been reported as working very well with the Panasonic:

  • Datawrite Titaniums 8X
  • Sony DVD-R 1x - 16x
