No. Full text searching is the most appropriate method here. Very few people do searches for one character.

Hi, great plugin especially since it also searchs nextgen gallery. However, I am facing one problem. Is it possible to refine search results to only display full words? For example if searching for the word 'one' also 'phone' or 'lonely' will be displayed as search result. If searching for a phrase such as 'Books to read' all posts with words containing the two characters 'to' will be displayed including Toronto, tobacco or who knows what else.

Full text search won't help. If the search terms include for example the article 'a' the search will display all posts with words containing the character 'a' (which means almost every post :)). Is there a way to refine the search here?
